MM: How To Eat An Elephant* 02/22/16 | Welcome to Monday! You have your whole week stretching out before you, a vast expanse full of new challenges and new opportunities to prove yourself. Let’s get ready to go out and tackle the world… Wait. What? What do you mean you’re not excited?!? Okay. I get it. We’re both staring down a week full of work. Meetings that need attending, projects that need doing, problems that need solving. It’s a week full of progressive verbs. If only we could actually get to the progressing part. Monday hits us hard. I’d suggest that its not just because the weekend is gone – it’s because we have to face down the enormity of all the “stuff” we have to get done any given week. We walk in to find an elephant sitting in our chair, or on our desk, and we just don’t know where to begin. We spend time thinking about how big the elephant is (see also: staring at the project email for 90 minutes), or deciding how best to marinate our elephant* (see also: figuring out what playlist to listen to on iTunes while you work), or ignoring the elephant completely (see also: social media, the internet, making a procrastinatory cup of coffee). Start your Monday right – close this blog post, pick up your spork, and take a big bite out of your elephant*. It’s the best and only way you’re going to knock this week out in style, and you’re probably going to find out that you’re a lot hungrier than you thought. *Elephants are not for eating, it’s just an expression.
